She shrieked with terror as the car tumbled down the hill, her body pulled in every direction like a rag doll. Finally, the vehicle landed on its hood, and she was hanging upside down. Why did this feel so familiar? Hadn’t this already happened? Unbuckling her seatbelt, she fell to the roof of the car, massaging her sore body. She looked around. The car was empty. Where was everyone?

Crawling out the open window, Nanda took in her surroundings. She was at the bottom of a sea cliff, a stony beach stretching out before her. The ocean flowed red, the sky black with an impending storm. Several funnels swirled above her, threatening to cast down destructive tornadoes. She shivered as she stumbled along the beach.

“Hello! Can anyone hear me?”

She trekked down the shoreline until she finally spotted someone else standing on the beach. Nanda sprinted forward, ignoring her screaming muscles. “I need help!” she shouted to the woman. But as she drew closer, she realized her mistake.

It was Nilaya.

She turned to Nanda and smiled, her hands covered in blood. Beyond her, a dozen whales were beached, hundreds of seabirds sprawled on the sand around them, twisted in death.

“Hello, Nanda. I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

Nanda took a step back. “This is a dream,” she reassured herself.

Nilaya cocked her head. “Is it?” she smirked, snapping her fingers. Nanda’s body felt light as she floated, her feet lifting off the ground. She flailed, trying desperately to get back to ground level as she levitated with Nilaya higher, higher. Until they were at least a mile above the Southern California coastline.

“Look around you,” Nilaya hissed.

Nanda craned her neck. Opposite the red ocean, the Santa Monica Mountains were clouded by billows of smoke and red flames. As her gaze drifted to the city, her breath caught in her lungs. The skyscrapers were nothing but blackened ruins, streets and homes charred or swept away entirely. Not a single soul walked the streets.

“Why did you do this?” she screeched, her voice trembling.

“They deserve it, every one of these selfish creatures who only live to destroy.”

Tears streamed down Nanda’s face. “There were good people down there! My dad was fighting to give the city clean energy. My best friend from high school just wanted to be an artist. And there were kids! Innocent children.”

Nilaya shook her head gravely. “None are innocent. Every human shares in the collective guilt of destroying this planet.”

“This isn’t the way!” Her voice was hoarse.

Nilaya sighed, staring out at the ocean as the dark clouds grazed the top of her head. “There is no other way. Every human must perish, along with the animals they ruined with domestication, the cats, dogs, farm animals who’ve been bred to depend on people. They all have to go.”

Nilaya set her jaw, her hands wrapping into fists. “I needed you to see it with your own eyes. You may not be alive by the time my plan comes to fruition, but I needed you to know. It’s going to happen no matter what you do, but I can still spare you.
